The Shores of Wickaninnish

By Linda Tancs

Plenty of resorts boast ocean views and beach access. But do they provide private showers for pooches like at the Wickaninnish Inn in Tofino, Canada? That’s just one of many unique experiences promised at this rustic enclave in Vancouver Island. For petless visitors, consider the rainforest beach loop hike on Saturdays or the art tour on Sundays. Or test your mental mettle with a stave puzzle in the library overlooking Chesterman Beach. You can get there via ferry or air, but the road from Nanaimo offers unforgettable views of the old-growth forests of Cathedral Grove, Sutton Pass ecological reserve, and Pacific Rim National Park Reserve.

Hail, Victoria

By Linda Tancs

Canada celebrates Victoria Day today, initiated in the 1800s to mark the birthday of Britain’s Queen Victoria. What better place to partake in the day’s festivities than in her namesake city, Victoria, B.C. Over 120,000 people are expected at the parade downtown. It’s a bit chilly (12 degrees Celsius) but it better be sunny. Victoria Tourism offers a sunshine guarantee during the months of April and May; you get $500 if it rains more than 1.25cm in one day during your visit.

Earth Day Celebrations

By Linda Tancs

Sleepy B.C. Village Energized with Tourism

By Linda Tancs

If you can’t immediately place Esowista Peninsula, you are forgiven. But give it a short while longer and everyone is likely to be talking about the quiet, little fishing village at its tip along the west coast of Vancouver Island in Canada. Named in 1792 after Vicente Tofino de San Miguel, Rear Admiral of the Spanish Naval Academy, Tofino is roughly 5 hours from Victoria, British Columbia and offers a variety of wildlife, hot springs and cultural tours. Largely dependent on tourism and aquaculture, you can count on year-round saltwater fishing opportunities, with world-class salmon fishing and flyfishing in Clayoquot Sound. Environmental preservation runs strong here. Just ask the locals to point out Eik Cedar Tree, the mascot of Tofino, an 800-year-old Western Red Cedar saved from the brink of condemnation thanks to the activism of its citizens. That may seem like nothing compared with the Hanging Garden Cedar, a living tree with a trunk circumference of 20 meters and estimated to be over 2,000 years old! A tree is our best antique, as the saying goes.

A Family-Friendly Day

By Linda Tancs

Public holidays generally bring families together–at least in theory. So it may seem strange to have a public holiday called Family Day. Yet in certain Canadian provinces, today marks that celebration. On the third Monday of February, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Ontario observe Family Day. Of course, the day would lack meaning if you didn’t spend it like a family. So find some family-fun things to do. How about spending time at the Toronto Zoo or the ice rinks? According to the Calgary Herald, Alberta is celebrating its twentieth anniversary of the statutory holiday. Surely, that’s cause for celebration. Only two years’ strong in Saskatchawan, the province nonetheless has the most public holidays in the country. Hopefully that translates into lots of family time.

Hassle-Free Flying in Toronto

By Linda Tancs

Short-haul flyers in Toronto can’t speak highly enough about Porter.  Situated downtown within easy reach of Union Station, this start-up offers flights between Toronto, Montreal, Quebec City, Ottowa, Halifax and Newark, New Jersey, with more U.S. destinations to follow.  Consider this list of features and benefits:  free ticket changes, free lounge access (leather seating) with complimentary wireless access, a free business center and all-you-can drink coffee, tea and soda.  A porter is defined as someone employed to carry burdens.  Sounds like they’ve taken a load off to me.

Happy Earth Day

By Linda Tancs

Today marks a worldwide celebration of our natural resources.  What better way to commemorate the day than to see what’s on in some of Mother Nature’s most glorious natural environments.  How about Hawaii?  Many Earth Day-related festivities have already started–and ended.  However, the Kona Earth Festival is still kickin’ until 21 June.  In Thailand, morning chants at Dhammakaya Assembly Hall started off the annual salute to our environment, ending tonight with fireworks at the Grand Meditation Square.  Calgary is celebrating with a call to action to Ward 9 to pick up litter for 22 minutes!  And the U.K.’s North Norfolk coast, an eco-friendly paradise for backpackers, is hosting an exhibition on environmental technology and initiatives at Deepdale Farm.  What’s on in your neighborhood?
