Dubai is Obvious Choice for Boat Show

By Linda Tancs

Named after its home port, the 531-foot mega yacht Dubai is the largest private yacht in the world, owned and presumably enjoyed by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of the Emirate of Dubai.  You might catch a glimpse of it at the Dubai International Boat Show, taking place now through 17 March.  Now in its 20th year, the event at the Marine Club promises more than 100 new exhibitors from over 24 countries.  Austria, Egypt, Hong Kong, Madagascar, Tunisia and Poland will be making debuts along with North Africa’s leading shipyard, Koot Yachts.  The show is open from 3 to 9:30 p.m.

The Yacht Industry’s Finest

By Linda Tancs

This Saturday’s 5th Annual World Superyacht Awards at London’s Guildhall demonstrates just how much size really does matter. The gala awards show and dinner showcases the best of the best in superyacht design this year. Fourteen Neptune awards will be issued, including best long distance voyager, best young designer, outstanding contributor to the industry, and yachts of the year in categories such as motor, refitted and sailing. Interested in attending? Alas, priority goes to yachtsmen. The rudderless can always watch the video.

Your Water Adventure Awaits

By Linda Tancs

Boating season is nearly underway or, in some cases, has already begun. Your water adventure awaits at Lake Powell, the majestic looking man-made lake along the Arizona/Utah border in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Of course, you can enjoy the tranquil beauty of the lake from the comfort of your spacious lakeview room or suite at the Lake Powell Resort. Or you can commune with nature on a luxury houseboat like the 75-feet Odyssey. The $12,000 price tag may seem a little steep, but if you gather up 12 of your closest friends to fill the quarters, then that’s only $1000 per person. Hey, what are friends for?

Boating Tips for Summer

By Linda Tancs

What better way to enjoy the open skies and starry heavens in summer than to go boating.  Rivers, lakes and open seas are now full of yachts, motor boats and everything in between.  As with any form of transportation, boating needs to be undertaken responsibly.  In addition to Mother Nature’s rip currents, hurricanes and other occurrences, operator-generated errors and omissions wreak havoc from time to time.  The U.S. Coast Guard publishes responsible boating guidelines that every operator and prospective passenger should read.  Ship ahoy!
