Casino Resort Towns Offer Genteel Charm

By Linda Tancs

Less than five miles from the bright lights, big city atmosphere of Atlantic City, New Jersey is a Southern-style genteel charm offered up by the cities of Ventnor and Margate. Look out for the wrought iron-terraced homes, white picket fences and covered porches reminiscent of Charleston and other Southern U.S. cities. Even more surprising, against the backdrop of this style and sophistication, Margate hosts a giant elephant–that’s right, an elephant–named Lucy. It’s a museum, actually, celebrating 128 years this July. Six stories high and shaped like an elephant, the museum (on the National Register of Historic Places) offers a view into southern New Jersey history. You won’t want to miss this stop on a tour of roadside America.

Casinos Bet on Airport Expansion to Boost Revenues

By Linda Tancs

If I were a betting person, I’d bet the odds are long that an expansion of the airport serving Atlantic City, NJ will bring in more slot players. For one thing, the 13-mile hike to the boardwalk once graced each season by Miss America is less than ideal as are the transportation options. From the airport, you can hail a taxi, rent a car, or take a shuttle service that only accepts cash. And given the economic crunch, it’s unlikely that any new carriers will enter the space or that the airport’s prime tenant, Spirit Airlines, will be able to offer significant new routing options. Still, fingers crossed. Time will tell. Here’s hoping that good ol’ AC can turn the tides.

Oktoberfest at the Taj

By Linda Tancs

Get your oom-pah on this weekend at the Taj Mahal. No, not the one in India–the one in Atlantic City, New Jersey. From noon till 8 on Saturday and noon till 6 on Sunday there’ll be non-stop entertainment direct from Germany, along with traditional eats and a shopping marketplace filled with imported gifts, clothes and tableware. The festival is 15 years’ strong and a big draw in the area. Be there or be square.

Sands Implosion Marks End of an Era

By Linda Tancs

Sands Casino in Atlantic City, once the stomping grounds for such luminaries as Frank Sinatra and his Rat Pack, is slated for implosion tomorrow at 9:30 p.m. amidst much pomp and flurry, including fireworks.   Aside from marking the end of a celebrity-infused era of glitz and glamor, the demolition is somewhat symbolic considering A.C.’s shaky economic footing these days.  So far this year, casino revenue is down nearly five percent.  Only time will tell if Pinnacle’s new luxe property will help improve the bottom line.  And so we salute the grand old Sands with a trivia question (answer to be posted tomorrow):  who was the last performer to grace the stage at Sands?
