Vermont’s Cabinet of Curiosities

By Linda Tancs

Vermont’s Fairbanks Museum & Planetarium was founded in 1891 based on a Victorian “cabinet of curiosities” collected by Franklin Fairbanks. The museum’s collection encompasses zoology, paleontology, geology, anthropology, ethnology and other natural sciences. It also features the only public planetarium in the state. Located in St. Johnsbury, be sure to visit the History and Heritage Center, where you’ll learn about the bustling town’s assets, like the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail. That’s New England’s longest rail trail, spanning 93 miles between St. Johnsbury and Swanton.
