Life on the Farm
By Linda Tancs
Is a farmer’s life for you? Here’s one way to find out: choose a Swedish farmstay. With over 300 participating farms, you can choose your length and type of accommodation, like a quaint B&B on an organic farm, for instance. Don’t worry, you needn’t milk the cows. There’s ample opportunity for horseback riding, hiking, swimming, fishing–or just enjoy the fertile farmlands of a district like Skåne.
68 Miles of Art
By Linda Tancs
Most underground maps serve no other purpose other than to help travelers navigate the labyrinth of tunnels among terminal points. Not so in Stockholm. You’ll be guided not only to the underground system but also to its art. Sweden’s capital city has the largest collection of underground art in the world, gracing more than 90 of its 100 stations along the 68-mile route. Guided tours are available.
Tallest Nordic Hotel
By Linda Tancs
Only 15 minutes from Stockholm’s city centre, the brand new Scandic Victoria Tower is the tallest Nordic hotel, piercing the skyline at 34 floors and with enough glass to clear Murano of its inventory. The glass-clad tower with distinctive windows forming triangular patterns was created by architect Gert Wingårdh. All of the hotel’s 299 rooms are doubles, with free access to the gym, sauna and internet. This month the Skybar opens on the 34th floor. Enjoy the view.
A Tour for the Millenium
By Linda Tancs
Imagine what a best-selling series of novels set in a popular European city can do for tourism. In Stockholm, they’ve seized the day with the Millenium tour, an offering by the Stockholm City Museum celebrating the late novelist Stieg Larsson’s three Millennium blockbuster bestsellers about journalist Mikael Blomkvist and computer hacker Lisbeth Salander. Now through September, the museum is offering a summertime tour around the central island of Södermalm, where the novels’ main characters lived and worked. Starting at Bellmansgatan (nearest Metro: Slussen or Mariatorget), the two-hour tour includes the apartment buildings of the lead characters as well as a view here or there of other views like Stockholm City Hall. Do take some time to tour the museum as well, the city’s cultural history authority housed in a 17th century palace.
Living in Eden
By Linda Tancs
The biblical Garden of Eden is often depicted as a paradise filled with lush greenery, flora and fauna. That’s probably what most folks living in Sweden’s Tanto allotment garden think of their digs: a modern day Eden, complete with pastel-hued fairy tale cottages, picket fences, manicured hedges and gardens. Lots of gardens. Located south of Old Town on Södermalm, one of 14 islands comprising central Stockholm, the one-time potato farm boasts designer gardens, kitchen gardens, countryside gardens, vegetable gardens and any other kind of garden you can dream of. Visitors are welcome. There are frequent buses to Tanto and the nearest underground station is Zinkensdamm.

A Taste of Sweden
By Linda Tancs
Feeling a bit of Smaklust? Then join 100,000 fellow foodies at central Stockholm’s 2009 tasting event from 21 to 23 August. In addition to the standard fare of reindeer, elk, and preserves of cloudberry comes such epicurean concoctions as asparagus schnapps, cloudberry wines, coffee cheese, elk salami and ostrich milk ice cream. Although held centrally, you’ll experience artisanal delights from all over the country. Eat up, don’t be shy. Best of all, admission is free, so you have more cash to support their culinary endeavors.

Tooling Around in Styrsö
By Linda Tancs
Within the Municipality of Gothenburg in Sweden (the seat of which is Gothenburg, Sweden’s second largest city) lies a tiny island called Styrsö. Connected to the big city by ferry, it’s a respite from the hustle and bustle of the concrete jungle. Less than a square mile in area, you can easily navigate with your three-wheeled moped, called a flakmoped. Use it to get to the quiet little beach on the southwestern side. After that, enjoy a sumptuous dinner at Pensionat Styrsö Skäret, a guest house with a family-friendly atmosphere and neighborly feel.

Malmö, Gateway to the Continent
By Linda Tancs
In the current edition of Travelrific® Travel Show, the topic is Malmö, Sweden. Malmö is Sweden’s third largest city but amazingly retains a very small town feel, no doubt helped by the easy reach of its beaches, shops, restaurants and museums. Find out more about this gateway to the continent here.
Venetian Charms are Everywhere
By Linda Tancs
Venice, Italy, must be one of the most evocative places on earth. Just think of every country, state or city that lays claim to its own Venetian-style heritage. Dubai is dubbed the Venice of the Middle East. Giethoorn is the Venice of the Netherlands. Bruges, Stockholm and Amsterdam vie for the title Venice of the North. Bangkok boasts the title Venice of Asia. Amidst the charms of every Venetian wannabee, however, there’s one thing missing from the equation: the toil and sweat of dedicated public works employees who clean out the billowy thoroughfares of the real McCoy day in and day out to keep it the aqueous paradise that so many seek to adopt as their own.
