Seafest is a Family Fun Affair
By Linda Tancs
Kaikoura Seafest at the Esplanade in Kaikoura, New Zealand bills itself as a smorgasbord of food, wine, and entertainment for the whole family. This year’s event will be held on 3 October, but be advised: tickets to the big top bash on 2 October are already sold out! The food part is easy; the event celebrates the abundance and variety of cuisine offered in the area, including mussels, paua, salmon, prawns, whitebait, ostrich, emu, crayfish, and more. As for the wine, this year’s event is sponsored by the North Canterbury Food and Wine Trail–need I say more? On the entertainment end, kids are sure to love the clowns, face painting, balloons and magic. Musical acts include The New Entrants, Sneaky Feet, Double Talk and The Black Velvet Band. Best of all, the winter has seen plenty of action in the Kaikoura Canyon, where three of the winter resident sperm whales have been sighted in addition to some transients. Just one more reason to make the trip.

The Ultimate Fashion Show
By Linda Tancs
Every fashionista knows that the line between art and fashion is not always clearly defined. Perhaps nowhere is this more evident than at the WOW (World of Wearable Art) Show in Wellington, New Zealand, where fashion and art merge annually at this time of year. Now through 4 October the WOW Awards feature over 150 garments of worldwide designers hand picked by judges to compete for $100,000 in prize money. In this Carnivale-inspired atmosphere, the top threads are showcased in all their sartorial splendor in a 2-hour theatrical and musical presentation. Fashion meets art. Or art meets fashion? You decide.

Happy 169th Birthday
By Linda Tancs
Those of us in the northern hemisphere can still celebrate the 169th birthday of Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city. And how did the locals mark the day? With a regatta, of course. The Auckland Anniversary Regatta takes place each year on the last Monday of January. Holding dual distinction as New Zealand’s oldest sporting event and the biggest day in the city’s sailing calendar, the festive occasion showcases a wide range of vessels from tall ships to dinghies competing for honors in their respective categories. Spectators find best views at Viaduct Harbour, Bastion Point, North Head, East Coast Bays, Tamaki Drive and Orakei Wharf. Take note for next year.

Sideways in New Zealand
By Linda Tancs
Movie buffs will recall the 2004 movie “Sideways,” about two men searching for the meaning of life amidst the California vineyards. Fast forward 12 hours (as the plane flies) and discover the fledgling wine country of New Zealand in Martinborough. The first fruits were planted there in 1978. Since then, nearly 40 wineries have sprung up, giving rise to an award-winning pinot noir. You can sample that varietal and other international winners at the annual Toast Martinborough food and wine festival, to be held this year on 16 November. Better hurry before the last ticket sells.

Moving at a Glacial Pace
By Linda Tancs
A glacial pace is taken to mean a slow, lumbering movement. Not that there’s anything wrong with that– unless we’re talking glaciers. Ice movements in New Zealand and Greenland are causing some consternation among naturalists and scientists alike, not to mention the uncertain effect on tourism. Consider this: New Zealand’s 2 million-year-old Tasman Glacier in Mount Cook National Park is losing 500 meters each year, an uncomfortable progression for a skiing destination touted as the ultimate New Zealand alpine adventure. On the other side of the world, Greenland’s glaciers have been shrinking for 100 years, losing some 150,000 tons of ice each year. That’s bad news for Disko Bay, where adventurists travel to marvel at a colossal collection of floe. Better get there before the glaciers leave town.
