Making Order Out of Chaos

By Linda Tancs

Wordsmiths will be battling it out in the National Scrabble Championship on August 6–10, 2011 at the Hotel InterContinental Dallas at 15201 Dallas Parkway in Addison, Texas.  Not just any wordsmith, mind you.  To compete you must be a rated player–in other words, an official brainiac.  This year’s tournament has four divisions, with the best players duking it out in Division 4.  So who will the W-I-N-N-E-R be?

The McKinney Experiment

By Linda Tancs

The folks of McKinney, Texas want you to know that they’re unique by nature.  Consider, for instance, the McKinney Experiment, a Wal-Mart test store for environmentally friendly processes and technologies.  One of only two such experimental Wal-Mart stores in the world, the goal is to make the best use of renewable and alternate sources like wind and solar energy to generate electricity to supplement the power needs of the store.  Environmental consciousness runs deep in this town 30 miles from Dallas.  This is home to the world’s first environmentally friendly, LEED-certified (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) automobile dealership as well as the country’s first privately developed LEED platinum building.  That should make any town green with envy.

German Settlers Remembered in Texas

By Linda Tancs

The Pioneer Museum of Fredericksburg, Texas is a memorial to the early German settlers in the Texas Hill Country.  A focal point of the area’s heritage is The Vereins Kirche, an extension of the museum located at Marktplatz.  Built soon after the arrival of the first German settlers (and since rebuilt after its destruction in 1896), it was the first public building in the town and served as a town hall, school, fort, and a church for all denominations.   The Gillespie County Historical Society/Pioneer Museum announced a fund raising campaign of $75,000 for its Diamond Anniversary Year.  By year end every dollar donated will be matched dollar for dollar by two challenge grants from the Dian Graves Owen Foundation and Kathryn Harrison.

The Arts Illuminated

By Linda Tancs

There’s more than just The Alamo to remember in San Antonio, Texas.  In particular, the month of March is a celebration of contemporary art, highlighted by the Luminaria on 13 March.  A nationally and internationally acclaimed event, Luminaria showcases every element of the visual and performing arts in one magnificent evening downtown.  Participants include several hundred artists and over 40 nonprofits.  In 2009, 185,000 people attended Luminaria.  Why not?  It’s free.  But with attendance like that, you’d better book your hotel now.

Steering Committee

By Linda Tancs

Although Dallas, Texas may be better known for its financial wheeling and dealing, at its heart (both metaphorically and geographically) lies a monument to its pioneering past. Appropriately enough, at Pioneer Plaza in central Dallas (near the Convention Center) is a sculpture series comprising 50 bronze longhorns steered by three cowboys on horseback. Said to be the largest sculpture of its type in the world, the work is a celebration of the working life of the area’s earliest settlers. Featuring native landscaping, a flowing stream and waterfall, here’s a place for peaceful contemplation in the financial district. Feeling bullish?
