Shakespeare and Beethoven, Perfect Together

By Linda Tancs

Boulder, Colorado brings you the classics this summer in equal measures of music and theatre.  From 20 June to 16 August at the Mary Rippon Theatre and University Theatre venues, Blue Mountain Arts presents a half century celebration of Shakespeare featuring Macbeth, Love’s Labour’s Lost and Henry the Eighth.  Maybe the Bard will inspire you to picnic at the Flatirons in Chautaugua Park, where you can listen to chamber music, the classics and international music from 21 June to 1 August.  In July, Beethoven rules with all nine symphonies presented from the 6th to the 13th of the month.  Just one more way to enjoy the mountain air.

Hiawatha Lives in Ironwood

By Linda Tancs

 At the door on summer evenings
Sat the little Hiawatha;
Heard the whispering of the pine-trees,
Heard the lapping of the waters,
Sounds of music, words of wonder;
‘Minne-wawa!” said the Pine-trees,
Mudway-aushka!” said the water. – “Hiawatha.”  Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Hiawatha still hears the lapping of the waters–from his bird’s-eye view of Lake Superior–in Ironwood, Michigan.  There, bearing an appellation that reads “World’s Tallest and Largest Indian,” stands an 18-meter high statue of Hiawatha, a chieftain credited with founding the Iroquois Confederacy.  Fans of roadside americana such as this can get directions here.

Want to see a Currier & Ives lithograph come to life?  Then be sure to visit Longwood Gardens’ Winter Fantasy now through 6 January.  Located in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania (outside Philadelphia), Longwood Gardens produces a dreamlike atmosphere of caroling, bell ringing, dancing fountains and outdoor lighting (500,000 bulbs strong) sufficient to snuff the bah-humbug out of anyone.  And don’t miss the skating shows highlighting professional and amateur skaters near the Chimes Tower.

Alaska’s Bridge Going Nowhere

By Linda Tancs

Alaska’s $300 million Bridge to Nowhere finally has a destination:  Neverland.  The abandoned project would have linked Ketchikan with Gravina Island (population: 50).  Apparently it’s infinitely more feasible to link Point MacKenzie (population:  230) with Anchorage, at double the cost.  Might this process merit a second look?  As Thomas Jefferson said, “Delay is preferable to error.”

Driving in Sweden

By Linda Tancs

It’s been reported that comedian Bill Murray was legally driving around Stockholm in a golf cart while illegally drunk.  Golf cart?  Perhaps he thought he was back in Catalina Island.  So just how popular is this mode of transportation in the city centre?  And was he wearing a helmet?

New York State Fair to Open in Syracuse

By Linda Tancs

Beginning on August 23 and continuing until September 3, Syracuse will once again host the New York State Fair at its Expo Center.   The fair’s theme this year is “Gotta Be There,” the urgency of which belies 161 years of standard fare in the way of exhibits, amusements and livestock demonstrations.  Nonetheless, these sorts of things are usually well endorsed by the kids, who can travel free on Amtrak under certain conditions.  Visit www.amtrak.com for details.

Bridge Ratings

By Linda Tancs

In light of the tragedy of the  Minneapolis bridge collapse, the safety of U.S. bridges is paramount on everyone’s mind these days.  So how safe are these bridges?  A review of the Bureau of Transportation Statistics Web site shows that the biggest loser in bridge safety is Oklahoma, with 27% of its bridges labelled as “structurally deficient.”  And what does “structurally deficient” mean, you ask?  Well, the Federal Highway Administration, 2006 Conditions and Performance Report defines “structurally deficient” as the result of an analysis of a bridge’s ratings according to its deck, superstructure and substructure, the highest rating being a 9.  So what does your state’s report card look like?  Ask your legislators.
