North America’s Largest Scandinavian Festival

By Linda Tancs

Tens of thousands of people visit Norsk Høstfest, North America’s largest Scandinavian Festival, in Minot, North Dakota.  Today through 1 October you too can enjoy such favorites as aebelskivers, lutefisk, and lefse.  Of course, the fest is more than just a food tasting.  There are also over 200 internationally recognized artisans and craftsmen, silver jewelry, Norwegian sweaters, authentic Scandinavian gifts, fine art and souvenirs. And don’t forget the hospitality.  There is a tradition at the festival of introducing yourself with, “Hi, and where are you from?” If you participate and encounter the “Mystery Viking,” you’ll win $100.  Skål!

The Buffalo City

By Linda Tancs

Jamestown, North Dakota is The Buffalo City, home to the world’s largest buffalo statue–a 26-foot-tall, 60-ton concrete giant at the Frontier Village.  Adjacent to the Frontier Village is a herd of real bison roaming 250 acres, including three rare albino bison.  Culturally and historically significant, the bison’s saga from prehistoric times to the present is preserved at the National Buffalo Museum.  Here’s one opportunity where you won’t mind being buffaloed.

Classics Gather in Grand Forks

By Linda Tancs

One of the largest gatherings of classic and modern motorcycles will take place in Grand Forks, North Dakota this weekend at the Alerus Center.  While you’re there, why not tour the historic district?  The city was first settled in 1870, becoming thereafter a hub of commerce with the advent of the railroad in 1880.  Lots of new commerce to choose from in the newly restored downtown, like the specialty shops in Riverwalk Center.  Maybe you’ll want to stay in a charming turn of the century home.   511 Reeves is a Victorian beauty, just one block off the Red River of the North.

Red River Valley

By Linda Tancs

When I practiced playing the organ as a child, one of the songs in my songbook was “Red River Valley.” A memory long forgotten, until the recent climatic catastrophe in this section of the U.S. straggling northeastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota. The river’s crest of over 40 feet this past weekend broke a 100-year record. Now a snowstorm threatens to dump 16 inches in and around the valley, putting the river level in peril once again. As a line in the song goes, “remember the Red River Valley.” Indeed, let’s keep the folks of this region in our hearts and prayers.
