A Doggone Good Time
By Linda Tancs
Traditionally, the second Monday of February kicks off America’s biggest pooch pageant, the Westminster Dog Show at Madison Square Garden in New York City. This year is no exception. On Monday and Tuesday, the great breeds of the world with origins from Egypt to Newfoundland will compete for the coveted title of Best in Show. This is a champions-only competition; no slouches here. They say with age comes experience, but some of these winners are quite young and accomplished. So which will it be: age before beauty or will the young and glamorous win out? It’s been a while since an oldie took the prize. In 1999, an eight-year-old Papillon took top honors. That’s doggone good.

NY Hotel Pampers Women
By Linda Tancs
Following up on our August 28, 2007 post, yet another hotel has opened up a floor exclusively to women guests. In the heart of New York’s Times Square, the Premier Hotel is apparently intent on living up to its name if the women’s floor amenities are any indication. A special lift escorts female visitors to a 7-room floor complete with Broadway-style lighted mirrors, roomy robes, bath products, and yoga mats. Coming soon are spa offerings with local businesses. Are you ready for your close up?

Summer Solstice Along the Hudson
By Linda Tancs
What better way to celebrate the summer solstice this weekend than at the Clearwater Music and Environmental Festival at Croton Point Park on the banks of the Hudson River in Westchester County, New York. Founded by musician Pete Seeger over 30 years ago, the festival mixes environmental education with cool tunes for a warm summer weekend. You can even sail on a replica of a 19th century riverboat. So make like Tom Sawyer and head on over.

Cleanse Your Palate
By Linda Tancs
They say good artists suffer for their art. And if the exhibition taking place at the Whitney biennial art celebration this year is any indication, they suffer for their ecosystem, too. At New York City’s Whitney Museum of American Art now through June 1, there’s an interesting fusion of environmental issues and contemporary art among the 80 or so exhibitors. You’ll find such eco-inspired displays as resin-encased compost droppings, a floral-infused recycled industrial trash heap, and sculptures modeled on bird droppings. Not to be outdone, Germany’s Biennial for Contemporary Art in Berlin offers the work of over 110 international artists until June 15. However, the difference between these biennials is like night and day. Literally. Berlin’s event is divided into two parts–Night and Day. At night, patrons can sample a mix of lectures, concerts, and even an out-of-body experimentation. During the day, the exhibition will have you walking the city at four distinct locations to take in sculpture, artwork and movable objects, some designed to evoke images of Berlin’s tortured past, like the Berlin Wall death strip.
Art with a conscience. That appears to be the promise of these events. Will you promise to go?

Queens Visit New York City
By Linda Tancs
For one day only, there’ll be three Queens in New York–of the Cunard variety, that is. On 13 January at 6:30 p.m., QE2, QM2 and Queen Victoria will sail out of New York harbor together for the first and only time, followed by a fireworks display amidst the Statue of Liberty. This is a one-time event because QE2 will be heading for retirement in Dubai near year’s end. Interested observers should head for one of four viewing areas: Battery Park, Wagner Park, Esplanade, or Hudson River Park.
Thanksgiving Parades
By Linda Tancs
The best known Thanksgiving Day parade is arguably the venerated and nationally televised Macy’s production in New York City, stepping off at 77th and Central Park West each year at 9 am. This parade, originating in 1927, is not the country’s oldest, however. That honor goes to Philadelphia. They’ve been parading since 1910, stepping off at 20th and Market at 8:30 am. In second place is Detroit’s parade, originating in 1924 and stepping off at 9:25 am at Woodward and Mack. Everyone loves a parade, and now you have three good reasons to join in–from the couch or the bleachers.
The Most Expensive Dessert in the World
By Linda Tancs
You can search the world over for a trifle sweet truffle but, according to Guinness World Records, you won’t find one as pricey as that served at an eatery on East 60th Street in New York City. The restaurant, known appropriately enough as Serendipity 3, offers a chocolate sundae concoction comprised of worldwide cocoas (or is that cacao?), whipped cream, edible gold (we’re not talking 10 carats here, but does it leave a metallic aftertaste?) and shavings from the venerable La Madeline au Truffe. What is La Madeline au Truffe, you ask? That’s a haute piece of chocolate truffle (with a little Perigord thrown in for good measure) created by Connecticut chocolatier Fritz Knipschildt. This consummate confection is served in a golden goblet ringed with a diamond bracelet and eaten with–what else–a gold souvenir spoon. That’s right–a souvenir. You might as well have something by which to remember this $25,000 gastronomic delight. Besides a lighter bank account, that is.

Never one to rest on his laurels, Trump has now launched the Trump Hotel Collection, a luxe brand including the New York Trump International Hotel and Tower and the yet-to-be completed Chicago and Las Vegas properties. In Chicago, the new Spa at Trump line will be unveiled, sporting dedicated spa guestrooms and a full-service health club. Lest you feel overwhelmed by all the extravagances available to you, a personal butler is on hand to see you through it. That alone should let you rest well on your 500 thread-count Bellino Italian bed sheets.
