Nearing a whopping $4 billion, the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas opened in mid-December.   A new luxe resort on The Strip, they aspire to cater to what they refer to as the “curious class.”  Are you curious?  Given the low fares to Vegas these days, you can afford to indulge it.

Hoover Dam Celebrates 75 Years

By Linda Tancs

The Hoover Dam, located 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas on the Arizona/Nevada border, was a landmark at its inception 75 years ago in 1935, when it was built to control the flow of the Colorado River and generate power.  Now this tourism staple has another dimension to offer visitors:  a concrete arch bridge bearing the distinction of being the largest in the Western Hemisphere.  Built for national security reasons, the imposing bypass bridge offers enviable panoramic views at an elevation of 900 feet.  In addition to a sidewalk on the north side of the bridge for optimum viewing of the dam, the project will ultimately include a parking lot, trail, and interpretive plaza.

Nevada State Fair Opens Today

By Linda Tancs

The Reno-Sparks Livestock Events Center hosts the Nevada State Fair today through 29 August.  Admission is free on opening night; the grand procession begins at 7 p.m.  As is the case with any state fair, the event will highlight the usual livestock shows, auctions, agricultural events, and exhibits, as well as carnival rides and live entertainment.  However, in this and future years Nevada’s long and storied Wild West history will be featured during the annual attraction.  That means you can expect to experience a mining camp, a frontier town, a Native American village, stage coach rides, and a host of other features defining the State’s history.  That’s a lot to see in one day, so why not buy a 3-day passport and save $45!

Poker Faces Galore in Las Vegas

By Linda Tancs

They’re making history at the World Series of Poker championships at the Rio Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. For only the second time in WSOP’s history, a pair of brothers made it to the final table for the Chip Reese Memorial Trophy and $1.55 million in prize money. The action is hardly over, however. The biggest poker gathering of the year runs until 17 July, culminating in the 13-day No-Limit Hold’em Championship. Wanna play? Better pre register to guarantee a seat at the pot of your choice.

Self Expression Rules at Black Rock

By Linda Tancs

Starting today through 7 September an annual experiment in communal living and survival–the Burning Man Festival–welcomes guests in Black Rock Desert in northwestern Nevada. What is Burning Man? As the organizers will tell you, it defies description; it’s to be lived to be believed. I’ll offer an analogy: it’s a sort of Woodstock for the intellectually curious, but be sure to bring your own towels. In fact, bring anything you’d need to survive. Each year’s event has its own theme. Draw your own conclusions about the festival from these past monikers: Fertility, Time, Hell, Outer Space, The Body, The Floating World, Beyond Belief, Vault of Heaven, Psyche, Hope and Fear, The Green Man, and The American Dream. The theme for 2009 is Evolution. Of course, as with any movement in self expression, there’s art: performances, sculpture, installations and costumes. And, of course, the Man. This year, the Man will burn on the evening of 5 September.

Flamingo Hosts Brother-Sister Duo

By Linda Tancs

It Takes Two.  Anytime Sunshine.  Show Me.  Sound familiar?  It does if you’re an Osmond fan.  Now you can hear Donny and Marie reprise their standards at the Flamingo in Las Vegas.  Their singing, dancing and comedic twists have been renewed for two years.  Will the headliners stay hot?  It’s anyone’s guess.  As the Osmonds sang, “It’s all been said before.”

Racing Around the World

By Linda Tancs

Start your engines, motor sports enthusiasts!  In light of the IndyCar Series’ recent announcement on the 2009 schedule, let’s look at race car museums around the world.  Just 30 minutes outside the Las Vegas Strip, the Vintage Race Car Museum in Henderson, Nevada surveys different eras in racing, covering sprint cars, midgets, Indy Race League cars and engines.  Across the country, Philadelphia’s Simeone Foundation Museum recently opened an exhibition of racing cars from World War I to the latest 21st century NASCAR.  For a European flair, head on over to Hamburg’s Prototyp for a view of a Le Mans race prototype and the Mercedes Benz world record car.  Best thing is, you don’t have to fill up the tank.
