World Natural Heritage in Germany

By Linda Tancs

Wattenmeer, or Wadden Sea, is an area stretching from the northern coast of Germany to the Dutch island of Texel. This region, comprising the largest continuous area of mud flaps in the world, is home to millions of migratory birds. Now it will likely see a boost in tourism thanks to its designation as a world natural heritage site by UNESCO, joining such other luminaries as the Grand Canyon, the Great Barrier Reef, the Galapagos and the Serengeti. The appointment couldn’t have come at a better time, considering UNESCO’s stinging removal of the Dresden Elbe Valley as a world cultural site thanks to a four-lane bridge spanning the river and spoiling the view.

A Carpet of Color

By Linda Tancs

American painter Georgia O’Keeffe once remarked, “I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way – things I had no words for.” Well, if colors could speak then there’d be a torrent of conversation taking place now through May at Keukenhof Gardens, a kaleidoscope of tulips and other flowering bulbs in the Netherlands near Amsterdam. Now in its 60th year, they say it’s the most photographed spot in the world. And why shouldn’t it be, with 7 million bulbs swaying in the breeze. Gives new meaning to the expression, ‘spring is busting out all over.’

In a bid for attention among the better known (and used) ports of the Mediterranean and Baltic, fifteen European ports have united to market their appeal to cruise travelers.  Calling themselves the Atlantic Alliance, the fifteen members of this cooperative are:  Hamburg, Bremerhaven, IJmuiden, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Antwerp, Cherbourg, Saint-Malo, Brest, Nantes, La Rochelle, Bordeaux, Santander, Vigo and Lisbon.  More West European ports are expected to join in the future.
