Living Art in London

By Linda Tancs

Forget your measly 15 minutes of fame. Lucky UK citizens get an hour’s worth in London as part of the One & Other living exhibition on the empty stone plinth at Trafalgar Square. The art project allows applicants from every part of the UK one hour atop the plinth, day and night, to exhibit themselves in any manner they wish. Needless to say, the results have been very colorful. Over 32,000 have applied for 2400 places. Some of the winners, chosen at random, include a town crier, an Elvis impersonator and a woman dressed as a pigeon.

London Airport is a Trendsetter

By Linda Tancs

Pillows, blankets and aisle seats. Ka-ching. Two checked bags. Ka-ching. As deficit-plagued airlines continue to dream up ways to spike revenues comes news out of London that an airport is getting in on the act. The Times of London reported that Luton Airport is assessing a 1 pound fee for airport drop-offs of up to 10 minutes. You can avoid the fee by dropping your baggage-laden beloved at the car park for a free shuttle. Let’s hope the rest of the world’s airports don’t seize onto this.

When Cars Fly

By Linda Tancs

The usual expression is “when pigs fly” (and of course they do, in some cultures) but now comes a flying car set on a course from London to Timbuktu–perhaps that journey is inspired by the metaphor “from here to Timbuktu.” The Parajet Skycar was developed by engineer and inventor Giles Cardozo, who seemingly has been inspired by Count Louis Zboroski, the maker of the Chitty Bang Bang series of flying cars in the 1920s, who in turn inspired Ian Fleming to write the children’s novel. Who knows, if they can perfect the contraption and mass market it, maybe our
childhood story will come to life.

Rollin’ On the River

By Linda Tancs

They say the wheels of progress move slowly. The problem is when they stop moving at all. In Singapore, the city’s observation wheel, the Singapore Flyer, stranded almost 200 tourists riding in its capsules overlooking Marina Bay for six hours last month due to a fire in the control room. This isn’t the first mishap for a giant ferris wheel. The London Eye likewise stranded passengers a while back due to a mechanical fault. The good news is that the error there was fixed in an hour. The Flyer has been closed for evaluation since the incident. Hopefully, it will open again in time for New Year’s celebrations in February. The Singapore Flyer is the world’s largest observation wheel at a whopping 541 feet, followed by the London Eye at 443 feet and Australia’s Southern Star in Melbourne at 393 feet. With a little tweak here or there, let’s say good things come in tall packages.

Of Gladiators and Chariots

By Linda Tancs

You know the old expression, “everything old is new again.” Now that applies to gladiators and chariots, too. In Rome, city representatives are contemplating an authentic re-creation (read: no puppet shows) of gladiator battles at the Colosseum, less commonly known as the Flavium amphitheater, in an effort to bring ancient Rome back to life. In another resurrection planned for over a decade, the O2 in London will present Ben-Hur, complete with its signature chariot scene made famous by Charleton Heston, in September. Presumably the show will tour Europe if all goes well in London.

Believe It or Not, It’s Open

By Linda Tancs

In September Ripley’s Believe or Not Museum finally opened in the heart of Piccadilly Circus. Given its bohemian nature, the location is quite fitting for the self-described odditorium. Where else can you see shrunken heads, crystal cars and a portrait of Diana made of laundry lint all under one roof? Open every day, now you have something to do on Sunday.

An Icy Reception

By Linda Tancs

“Put it on ice” takes on a whole new meaning at London’s Ice Bar in the heart of Mayfair. As the city’s first permanent watering hole made of ice, it’s outfitted with tables, seats, wall hangings and drinking glasses made of pure ice. Of course it’s cold, kept at minus 5. The thermal cape and hood ensemble helps block the freeze, but the gloves aren’t enough to keep your hands from numbing after about a half hour. Good thing visits are limited to 45 minutes. Find your inner polar bear and give it a try.

Get Ready for the Prom

By Linda Tancs

The BBC Proms at Royal Albert Hall, held from July through 13 September this year, are one of the most beloved classical musical events in the world. No less so for the Last Night, beginning with the singing of old English folk songs. In addition to the usual festivities for the masses in Hyde Park, the season’s swan song will be concelebrated in Glasgow, Belfast and Swansea with a mix of Scottish, Irish and Neopolitan ensembles. Come on and join the party.

Heathrow Ad Likely to Promote Ire

By Linda Tancs

Following up on our 3 April post, a recent ad by British Airways promoting Heathrow’s new Terminal 5 will likely throw salt into the wound of any traveler who “benefited” from the experience.  The ad, entitled “Feel Calm Again,” directs you to “immerse yourself in serenity as you flow effortlessly through your journey.”  Yep.  Memo to Ad Team:  Major media ad placement shall hereafter take place following successful testing of new launches.
