Gone With the Wind

The Pulitzer Prize-winning novel Gone With the Wind spawned one of the highest-grossing motion pictures of all time, not to mention classic quotes. Fans may love to talk the talk, but now they can walk the walk via the Gone With the Wind Trail. Winding its way in and around Atlanta, the journey takes in sites such as Margaret Mitchell’s house (an apartment in the 1930s, which she famously referred to as “the dump”), her grave at Oakland Cemetery and the Gone With the Wind Museum, where Scarlett’s honeymoon gown (one of only eight originals known to exist) is a popular attraction. Springtime is a great time for a visit, when the state is awash in color thanks to plentiful azaleas, wisteria and magnolias. Don’t expect to complete the entire circuit (taking in Atlanta, Marietta and Jonesboro) in a single day. Why should you? As Scarlett so aptly put it, “Tomorrow is another day.”

America’s Wilderness Beach

Cumberland Island in Georgia proudly identifies itself as “America’s Most Beautiful Wilderness Beach.” Operated by the National Park Service, this national seashore is home to over 9,800 acres of Congressionally designated wilderness. No wonder, then, that the area is so richly populated by wild horses, sea turtles and wild turkeys among the dunes, salt marshes and mud flats. This is a wonderful camping destination, accessible via the Cumberland Queen ferry from historic St. Mary’s.

Just Peachy

Where else but in Peach County, Georgia would you expect to find Georgia’s Peach Festival. Taking place in Byron and Fort Valley from 3 to 11 June, the highlight of the proceedings is the debut of the World’s Largest Peach Cobbler–11 by five feet and about eight inches deep –made from 90 pounds of butter, 150 pounds of sugar, 150 pounds of flour, 32 gallons of milk and 75 gallons of delectable Georgia peaches. A Place of Quiet Beauty

Pebble Hill plantation in Thomasville, Georgia bills itself as “a place of quiet beauty.” There certainly is plenty of ground for quiet reflection. Amidst the hallmark pines that define the plantation’s landscape, The Main House is framed with numerous camellia bushes, dogwoods, magnolias, azaleas, tea olives, and Cherokee roses. Near the North entrance to the House is a wonderful crepe myrtle tree, perfect for contemplating life plans. The Uno Hill Barn grounds offer views of the serenity of the piney woods. Or you could just marvel at the plantation’s substantial famed collection of prints from the first edition of Audubon’s Birds of North America. There’s plenty to do; come early, stay late.

Mules Come Calling at Calvary

Calvary, Georgia, is some 200 strong but every first Saturday of November the tiny town swells to a megalopolis. That’s when they celebrate Mule Day, a festival including a parade of mules, horses, wagons, any kind of mule drawn equipment, and antique autos. Following the parade is a mule show. The 38th annual festival also includes arts and crafts, a flea market, sling shot shoot, petting zoo, corn and cane grinding, syrup cooking, singing and lots more–even mule jokes.

Pebble Beach of the East

Sea Island is a resort along the southeast coast of Georgia sporting ocean-view villas, a football field-sized spa, and a seaside golf course. Sounds like the perfect spot for a golf tournament. The PGA folks think so, too; that’s why the resort’s course will host a new PGA Tour event called the McGladrey Classic. Gates open tomorrow through 10 October. Proceeds from the event benefit Special Olympics, the Boys and Girls Club of Southeast Georgia and Safe Harbor. Free parking is located at McKinnon Airport on St. Simons Island, where a shuttle to the course will be provided. Need a place to stay? The resort’s centerpiece, The Cloister Hotel, awaits you with five miles of private beach to keep you busy while the pros square off.
