Asian Art Biennial Celebrates Life and Art
By Linda Tancs
Oscar Wilde believed that the secret of life is in art. The Asian Art Biennial at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts is examining that interrelationship and its effect on shaping today’s Asia during the Viewpoints and Viewing Points exhibition from 24 October until 28 February. Fifty-six artists and teams from 20 Asian-Pacific countries have been invited to give their views on the current situations in Asia. What better place to start than with the diverse host locale of Taiwan, an island of multiple tribes, cuisines and religions. And now with the Neihu line connecting all of Taipei’s 12 administrative districts, you can explore the island’s largest city with ease.
Bright Lights, Big City
By Linda Tancs
In Chiang Mai, a mountain-ringed metropolis north of Bangkok, they’ll be lighting up the night sky with thousands of floating lanterns this weekend in the annual Loy Krathong festival. At ground level, you can set more lights afloat on banana leaves across the Ping River, a symbolic gesture celebrating the resources of the waterway and casting off misfortune. No doubt a sight to behold, you can capture the essence of it here.
Beijing Celebrates Diversity
By Linda Tancs
Sixty years of Communist rule will soon be feted in Beijing when National Day celebrations commence on 1 October. In addition to its spectacular military parade on Tiananmen Square, the city has erected giant columns to celebrate China’s ethnic diversity. Rivaling the attention given the Bird’s Nest of Olympics fame, the pillars of red and gold are an imposing sight in a city basked in notoriety for its reinvention. Consider the refurbished Palace (now Peninsula) Hotel, the World Trade Center, Grand National Theatre and redesigned airport. Maybe the pillars are as much a tribute to architectural diversity as anything else.

Saipan Remembers
By Linda Tancs
July 9 marks the final day of the Battle of Saipan in 1944, one of the fiercest battles of World War II. In a memorial park overlooking what has come to be known as Banzai Cliff some four miles from San Roque on the northern tip of Saipan, Bodhisattva of Mercy and Peace keeps vigil. Hundreds of Japanese soldiers and civilians met their fate at Banzai Cliff and Suicide Cliff in lieu of suffering capture by Allied forces.
