The Year of Klimt

By Linda Tancs

2012 marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Gustav Klimt, an Austrian painter and illustrator.  Ten Viennese museums will herald the event with special exhibitions throughout the year, featuring his paintings, drawings and designs.  The Belvedere has the world’s largest collection of Klimt paintings, where a special exhibition is already underway highlighting his collaboration with Josef Hoffmann.  Later, in May, don’t miss the first public viewing of the Wien Museum’s collection of 400 Klimt drawings.  In the meanwhile, don’t miss the Art History Museum event beginning next month, or the spectacular events scheduled for Albertina, the Theatre Museum, Kuenstlerhaus, Folklore Museum, Leopold or the Museum of Applied Art.

Museum Weekend in Holland

By Linda Tancs

Three of the most significant museums in Holland are in Amsterdam’s Museum Square:  the Van Gogh Museum, the state museum and the municipal museum.  How’s that for convenience?  If you’re like millions of other visitors each year, you’ll want to see Van Gogh’s famous Sunflowers portrait, immortalized in postcards and greeting cards.  Most of his paintings have never left Holland, so viewing his work is a uniquely Dutch experience to enjoy.  During the first weekend in April it’s also uniquely Dutch to visit as many museums as you can–free–thanks to Museum Weekend, now 30 years’ strong.  Over a million visitors attended last year’s event.

Man’s Best Friend Unleashed at Sydney Film Festival

By Linda Tancs

Sydney’s film festival has gone to the dogs, as 2010’s theme, Unleashed, suggests. On the festival’s home page you’ll find a pageant of pooches, including Derek the stuntman (or stunt pooch). Well, they do say the festival is open to everyone. Now in its 57th year, it’s one of the longest running festivals. From 2 June to 14 June, you can experience a good share of thrills, chills, passion, humor, action and traction in a variety of venues at the heart of Sydney’s business district and along the harbor. In fact, 150 feature-length films from around 45 countries, including features, documentaries, short films, retrospectives, a silent film presentation, and films for families await you. And with fares at historic lows, you have no reason to bow out of this one.
