Open Skies to Advance Competition
By Linda Tancs
Lower transatlantic fares and flight availability. Sound good? That’s the premise behind the US/EU Open Skies agreement, set to take effect in March 2008. Under the agreement EU airlines will be able to fly to any city in the U.S., and U.S. airlines will be able to fly to any city in the EU. Will this have any effect on competition, or will outside factors (like fuel costs and gate rentals) set the game rules? Stay tuned.

By Linda Tancs
So what’s a little $9.4 billion among friends? That’s the amount of economic loss that the U.S. Dept. of Transportation estimates is lost due to air traffic delays. Maybe that’s why galactic travel is gaining interest these days. It costs less and traffic is light.

By Linda Tancs
“Airport amusement” in the same sentence? No, this isn’t an oxymoron (unless, of course, you’ve been stranded there). Not sure what to buy at Heathrow? Let your shopping consultant do the heavy lifting for you.
Plane Etiquette

Remember that you’re not (necessarily) entitled to claim all the arm rests. If you sit on the aisle, take the aisle arm rest. If you sit near the window, take the arm rest on the left. If you’re stuck in the middle, then you deserve both!
Retail Therapy

“The sky’s the limit” takes on a whole new meaning with inflight shopping. In addition to duty-free purchases, there’s the ubiquitous SkyMall catalog, hawking everything from teddy bears to canopied mini bars for your poolside entertaining. Well, if you’ve got a captive audience you might as well try to captivate them.

New Kid in Town
By Linda Tancs
Pending U.S. Department of Transportation final approval, looks like Virgin will fly on this side of the pond from home base in San Francisco. Foreign airlines seeking fly rights within the U.S. must show that U.S. operations are controlled and majority owned by U.S. citizens. You can read the DOT’s documents in the Virgin case by looking it up at http://dms.dot.gov under docket OST-2005-23307.
